Crime killer romance

AmericaCharles twice confessed to Richard about dumping the bodies of young girls in the desert and both kept it a secret, but everything changed when they both fell in love with the same girl.

Charles was born in 1942, to a poor single mother and was quickly adopted into a wealthy family just a day after he was born. Charles once tried to meet his birth mother, but his birth mother chased him away and shouted at him never to return.

He was poorly educated but handsome, intelligent, and excelled in sports. In 1960, she helped her high school achieve the State Gymnastics Championships. Soon after, Charles was suspended for stealing school supplies. In the end, he dropped out of school.

Charles’ best friend is John Saunders – he’s had to go to the hostel many times because of his long list of bad accomplishments like drinking, hitting people, stealing… moving in with Charles.

Charles’ adoptive parents spoiled their son completely but rarely really cared about his education. To make Charles less intrusive, they bought a large capacity car and motorcycle when he was 17 and let him live from place to place.

Charles was short, often stuffing rags and metal tins into his boots to make them appear taller. He also drew a large mole on his face and dyed his hair black to make him look more attractive and like his idol, singer Elvis Presley. Charles spent most of his time on the road, dating girls, and drinking.

With money, a lack of attention from his parents, driven by bad friends, Charles’ mood is increasingly negative and chaotic. “Every sense of adventure I’ve had, only one thing hasn’t,” Charles whispered to John Saunders of the assassination plot.

Alleen Rowe is a 15-year-old student who moved to Tucson a few months ago. He was in the same class as Mary, Charles’ girlfriend.

One of Allen’s hobbies is walking in the desert, collecting oddly shaped rocks. Blond, blue eyes and an outstanding academic record, Alleen attracted the attention of many boys at school, and both were gentle.

On May 31, 1964, Charles tried to convince Allen to go with him to “match” John Saunders. Allen refuses due to multiple assignments but is attracted to new friends. He waited for his mother to leave for work on the night shift and then hopped into the car parked in front of the door, unaware that the two men had left the shovel in the trunk.

They went out into the desert, drinking and chatting. At Charles’ suggestion, the four of them walked into the desert to find a seat and talk. After a while, Charles asked his girlfriend to go back to the car to pick up the radio and listen to music. When only 3 people remained, Charles and John tried to harass Allen but he fought back hard and they hit him on the head with a rock.

When Mary returns, Charles lies that John accidentally pushed Allen down, so the three of them dig in the sand and hide Allen’s body. They agreed that if asked, they would say that they came to pick them up that night but did not meet them.

Returning home from the night shift, Allen’s mother frantically searched for her son and called the police after days without a clue. Meanwhile, his father calls his wife and tells her that he dreamed of his daughter being murdered and hiding her body in the desert. Despite an extensive search for weeks, they did not find a body.

Charles, Mary, and John were also interrogated, but their trickery did not arouse suspicion from the police. Authorities quickly speculated that the girl had run away from home with some secret boyfriend and closed the case.

While in hiding, John Saunders then enlisted in the National Navy. Charles soon found a replacement for John. Richie Bruns is Charles’ best friend – a quiet man, who has just left the orphanage for a petty crime.

In July 1964, Charles saw a 16 year old blonde girl named Gretchen Fritz. During a follow-up house, Charles realizes that he lives in a luxurious mansion in an upscale neighborhood. His father was a doctor and a member of the board of directors of Union Bank. But Gretchen seemed the opposite of this pious family atmosphere, always rebellious and destructive, comfortable playing with bad boys.

This made it easier for Charles to approach and date. The only problem with this young woman’s relationship is that she and Richie Bruns don’t like each other. Richie repeatedly advised you to quit, but Charles said he couldn’t, saying he “gave him a shocking secret”.

Charles confesses to Richie that he is Allen’s killer. Charles also told this story to Gretchen and threatened that if she broke up, he would report it to the police. But Gretchen couldn’t do that.

On the night of August 16, 1965, Gretchen left the house at 7:30 pm with her 13 year old sister, to go see tickled me, new film by Elvis Presley. The two girls never came home. The father hired a private detective to search.

Witnesses said that night they saw two girls who looked like Gretchen’s sister hitchhiking on their way to Nogales, a border town. They were picked up by car bound for Mexico. And in Mexico, many people say they saw the two girls take the bus to Hermosillo, a city 300 kilometers away.

The search for central Mexico has continued for months without further leads. Eventually, as in Allen’s case, the police also gave in and put them on the list of young girls pursuing love calls, officially ending the search.

Richie was the only one who found this “very familiar”, so he asked his friend. Charles confessed that that night, he killed two girls and took the bodies to “somewhere I don’t remember”. Richie suggests burying the first thing, and that night they take the bodies out into the desert.

While Richie is still shocked by your crimes, Charles quickly falls into a dozen new love relationships as if nothing happened.

But then their friendship didn’t last long. A new girl appears on the street, comforting Charles, openly flirting, but she also makes Richie secretly fall in love. Richie and the girl quickly became a couple.

Worried that Charles will hurt his loved ones but also unable to reveal Charles’ crimes to his girlfriend, Richie tries to follow him everywhere to watch over and protect him from afar. In such a way, his parents thought Richie was a harasser and alerted the police to arrest him.

Richie has to flee to Ohio, to live with his grandmother, but can’t stop worrying about his girlfriend. In the end, he decided to report Charles and lead the police to the body of Gretchen Fritz’s sister. He thought it was time to confront the killer.

On November 10 of the same year, Charles was arrested at his home. Then, one officer flies to Connecticut to arrest John Saunders and another officer goes to Texas to arrest Mary, Charles’ boyfriend in the first murder. The two pointed to the place where Allen’s body was buried, but to no avail. It seems that a major sandstorm that year caused the skeleton to be displaced.

At the preliminary hearing, John Saunders pleaded guilty First degree murder, was sentenced to life imprisonment, pardoned after 7 years. Mary was approved by the prosecutor’s office for a lower fee of Hiding criminalswas sentenced to four years in prison, on the condition that both men testify against Charles.

In February 1966, Charles appeared in court on three grounds first degree murder, with three witnesses against him: his two best friends and his first love. He was sentenced to death. But because the state of Arizona abolished the death penalty while Charles awaited execution, his sentence was commuted to 50 years in prison.

But Charles’ character doesn’t seem to have changed much in prison. The habit of pacing that made the inmates itchy. After two failed escapes, Charles was badly beaten by his friends and died on March 30, 1975.

Yet Charles’ story remains in popular culture. The brutal case inspired a 1966 short story and two films, Smooth Talk, 1985 and Dawn, year 2014.
