What does laughter say about you?

Smiling is a way for us to tell if someone is happy or amused. Recent scientific discoveries have also proven that laughter can help us understand others as well as ourselves. This has been proven by psychologists and researchers after doing research on laughter for some time.

Various studies have shown that laughter says more than just saying the person is happy. Here are fun things you can learn through laughter.

1. Identify spontaneous laughter and voluntary laughter

There are two types of laughter: spontaneous laughter and voluntary laughter.

Spontaneous laughter is characterized by an uncontrollable response to something that makes us laugh. It’s like watching a funny joke. This excitement makes you laugh and makes special sounds that are hard to fake.

Voluntary laughter, on the other hand, is made with a deliberate sound and is the kind of laugh you make when you want to politely react to someone’s joke.

2. You tend to laugh more when you know the person is telling a joke

Do you have a friend or favorite comedian who always makes you laugh when you hear a story? Science says that we are more likely to laugh at someone or laugh at someone when there is familiarity. We often see jokes become funnier when the person telling them is known.

3. We laugh the most when we are with friends

According to Robert Provine, a psychologist from the University of Maryland, we are 30 times more likely to laugh at something when we talk to other people. Research also shows that it’s not jokes that make us laugh, but rather the way we react to other people to show them that we like and understand what they share.

4. Relationships will last longer when we laugh together

UC Berkeley psychologist Bob Levenson conducted research on this subject. Specifically, in the study, he asked partners to talk about sensitive issues like what irritated them about their partner.

The results showed that when partners smiled or burst out laughing during a conversation, they often regained their spirits quickly, feeling better even though they had just talked about an upsetting topic. They also shared that they felt more satisfied with their relationship and stayed together longer.
