The first robot that knows how to peel bananas

Peeling bananas is inherently a challenge for robots due to the need for lightness and flexibility, but a new generation of robots has been able to accomplish that task with ease.

According to New ScientistRecently, scientists from the University of Tokyo (Japan) have developed a generation of robots that can peel bananas and when finished, the banana is still intact.

This robot has two arms, each hand has two fingers to grasp objects. At first, to “train” this robot, the team had to program it so that it could peel hundreds of bananas in 13.5 hours, generating enough data to help the robot get used to it. .

The task is also divided into 9 different stages, from teaching the robot to learn how to hold a banana, to lifting the banana to peel it from top to bottom, and so on.

At each stage, the robot will have to perform well before it can move on to the next part. After completing the “training” period, the team found that the robot was able to peel bananas with a fairly high success rate, without crushing or damaging the bananas. The whole process of peeling bananas takes less than 3 minutes.

The research team hopes that, in the near future, this robot model will be developed to be applied to jobs that require more lightness and dexterity.

Before that, a team from Switzerland created a robot that can make cheese sauce on its own.

This robot costs about 325,000 USD, can perform all stages in a sauce making process, from cutting cheese, pouring wine, seasoning, placing on the stove, stirring, …
