Gen Z wants their parents to understand their generation better

Parents instead of comparing, please encourage and spend more time with Gen Z to understand and accompany them, shared by two guests at The SACE Journey discussion No. 2.

At the talk show The SACE Journey No. 2with the theme “How Gen Z overcomes happiness and overcomes suffering”, the two guests of the program, Do Hong Hoang My, a graduate student at Harvard University, and Vo Phuong Dung, a 12th grader at Renaissance International School, had great experiences. interesting sharing about his generation and sending thoughts to parents.

Vo Phuong Dung (born in 2004) was in the Top 10 of the G-College Singapore Travel Award 2021 contest. The female student co-founded the emPower project, and is a member of the PR department of Go Green Together. Spending a lot of time on social activities and listening to the sharing of many peers, Phuong Dung said, I see many parents of your friends comparing their children with other people’s children, or comparing themselves with others. how were the parents in the past, what should the children be like now… without knowing that repeating those things many times will put pressure on them, even making them unable to express themselves, becoming shy, shy.

Also according to Gen Z 2004, parents should spend a lot of time with their children, gently prompting them to open up and share their teenage thoughts and problems. On the other hand, many Vietnamese parents like to compare but lack praise, encouragement and encouragement. “The comparison makes us feel that we have many shortcomings, need to make more efforts. But having made efforts but still not being recognized will reduce the will to strive”, Phuong Dung confided.

As the first Gen Z, Do Hong Hoang My, a graduate student at Harvard University, said that she is lucky to have a mother who grasps trends very quickly. “Mother always understands what I want, so when something happens, just talk to her, she will give very timely and objective suggestions,” Hoang My said.

The Harvard graduate student sends a message to parents to look at Gen Z in a positive way, don’t think that Gen Z can only eat and drink, too happy to not grow up. “Gen Z is not childish, our thoughts are colorful. As long as parents show faith in their children, that’s the strength for us to continue on our path. Parents just need to stand After monitoring, don’t stand in front to block what you want,” Hoang My reminded.

According to Hoang My, when I opened my heart to share my opinion, it seems like a myth, maybe even meaningless, but that’s just my parents’ thoughts. Parents don’t know this magical world can one day lead their children to a certain success. Therefore, parents should not immediately reject the suggestions of their children, but temporarily accept, even without understanding, just keep an eye on how their children are prepared to implement that idea. Parents just need to tell their children if they stumble, that they are here, that’s enough of the parent’s role.

Dr. Nguyen Tran Phi Yen, program coordinator, said that Gen Z students think they are dependent on their parents because they are being cared for too much, but they turn out to be very strong and independent thinking. Meanwhile, the excessive concern of parents is a hindrance, the suffering that Gen Z must find a way to “overcome happiness”.

“Gen Z students really want to talk to their parents and want to bridge the gap in communication. Through this talk, it can be seen that children do not want to push their parents away, but want to accompany their parents. with me, instead of confrontation,” said Dr. Phi Yen.

On the part of parents, Dr. said that parents should not underestimate the views and interests of students. From the smallest things can also build bigger things. For example, those who are interested in cats and dogs can also relate to later careers as veterinarians, philanthropists saving pets…

“There is no profession in society that is low and unreasonable. Let your child be free to explore any profession he wants,” said Dr. Phi Yen.

In fact, many studies show that the more modern society is, the more technology develops, the more information, the more material things are, the Gen Z generation has its own sufferings. If the parent generation’s suffering is material deprivation, Gen Z’s suffering is the excess, overeating and the dizzying changes of modern society. In the end, they themselves have to overcome suffering with bravery that our parents have never met.

“Although there is still a gap between parents and students, with parents who are willing to change their perspective, and students who dare to show their bravery and independence in their lives, I believe Gen Z will continue to grow. will bring more surprises and will be a successful generation,” said Dr. Phi Yen.
