As a rule, anyone who violates it will be dealt with according to Islamic Sharia law and crops will be destroyed.

This is not the first time the Taliban has issued this ban. In 2000, the Taliban government issued a similar ban.

The United States and NATO have also attempted to rein in opium cultivation in Afghanistan during their two-decade presence in the country by providing financial support to farmers who grow alternative crops such as wheat or saffron.

Afghanistan is the world’s largest opium producer. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Afghanistan has a near monopoly on opium and heroin production, accounting for 80-90% of global production. The opium acreage in Afghanistan increased to a record in 2017.

In recent years, the average area under opium poppy cultivation in Afghanistan has been about 250,000 hectares, about four times the level of the mid-1990s.
