The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, noted that countries in the region such as Romania, Poland and the Baltic states are “very willing” to have permanent US bases.

Speaking before the House Armed Services Committee, General Milley said: “They will build and pay for these bases.”

According to Mr. Milley, bases should have a rotating expeditionary force instead of deploying units that are permanently deployed. “I recommend building permanent bases, but not permanently stationing troops,” Milley said.

The US currently has troops deployed across Eastern Europe out of nearly 100,000 in Europe. However, Washington mainly has permanent bases in Western Europe.

General Milley emphasized that a number of Eastern European countries such as Lithuania, Poland and Romania have expressed their willingness to establish US military bases on their territory.

For his part, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said a decision on the matter would be made after consulting with NATO. “If NATO considers it appropriate to adjust its presence, the United States will certainly participate,” Austin said.

According to Austin, discussion on the deployment of a permanent military base in Eastern Europe will take place at the next NATO summit in June.
