Why does the demon lord Muzan hate the high mystery Doma?

Warning: This article does not reveal the content of Koyoharu Gotouge’s Kimetsu no Yaiba manga.

Despite being the ancestor of the demons in Kimetsu no Yaiba, Muzan Kibutsuji has always felt contempt for the demons he created. Even in the Twelve Demon Moons, there are only a few names that are his favorite such as the lower quintet Rui, the upper quintessential Gyutaro, and the upper quintessential Akaza. However, what surprised many viewers and readers of Kimetsu no Yaiba was that in the official fanbook written by author Koyoharu Gotouge it was revealed that Muzan really didn’t like Doma. Looking at the list of demon favourites, it was clear that the order of rank had nothing to do with the demon lord’s attitude towards his subordinates, even he did not hesitate to massacre the unsatisfied demons in Twelve. Demon Moon. So how can a demon as hated by Muzan as Doma stay in the top position for hundreds of years without being eliminated by him?

Doma, Akaza’s nemesis, causes enmity everywhere, though he seems to be the friendliest and most polite demon of the Twelve Demon Moons. Akaza hates Doma for two reasons, Doma cannibalizes women – whom Akaza refuses to harm – and he ascends to the top position despite joining Kizuki much later than Akaza. With the most famous Kokushibo, Doma is like a low-key subordinate, without the martial spirit like Akaza. Nakime, on the other hand, flatly refused Doma’s invitation to date. Therefore, not only Muzan hated Doma, but even the other “colleagues” in Kizuki completely disliked him.

When Muzan convened a meeting of the High Demons after Gyutaro was defeated, he angrily questioned why none of the six demons had destroyed the Demon Slayers or found the blue burdock. Although Doma expressed remorse for having recruited Gyutaro, and admitted that he could not find the blue lily or Ubuyashiki’s whereabouts, he was quick to blame himself for his inability to investigate. Also in the meeting after 113 years between the high legends, Doman – the third strongest demon after Muzan and Kokushibo – twice angered Akaza and literally blew his head off.

Muzan Kibutsuji often kills his subordinates when he feels uncomfortable. However, in the case of Doma, he left this demon free to act as he wanted – running the Ten Thousand Great Bliss sect. Doma used this cult to attract and eat female followers, making them part of his body. This hobby of choosing his prey probably helped him become strong quickly, because he once remarked that women are nutritious food for the devil. Thanks to possessing an outstanding source of strength, Doma was able to be at peace before Muzan’s difficult times.

At the end of the Blacksmith’s Village arc, Muzan revealed that he didn’t want to create other demons in the first place. The only reason why he had to constantly create demons was hoping for a demon capable of walking under the sun. If Muzan were to absorb such a demon, he would gain the power he longed for, becoming the most perfect being. Therefore, it can be guessed that Muzan didn’t kill Doma despite hating the demon because he didn’t want to lose a subordinate with formidable power.

When Muzan decided to destroy all of the lower demons, he fully believed that none of these demons were strong enough to withstand the sun nor to help him in his battle with the Demon Slayer. Compared to the lower level demons, except for being more talkative, then Doma has more potential to be exploited. Even if Nezuko Kamado could walk in the sun, Muzan still needed Doma to fight the Demon Slayer. Thus, it can be seen that even though he is an unpleasant person, thanks to his endless strength, Doma can still keep his life before the demon lord Muzan.
