Cao Bien’s officials were associated with wars and he led troops to participate in many battles such as: quelling the Dang Dang people, defeating the Nam Chieu army invading Giao Chau, fighting the Thuc army, putting down the Hoang Sao rebellion…

Cao Bien became a famous general when he defeated the Nam Chieu army. But he later failed to repel Huang Chao’s revolt and fell out of favor. At the end of his life, he made the mistake of becoming more and more confident in the scholar Lü Yongzhi and his two armies, so much so that Lü Yuzhi took control of the army, in effect, anyone who dared speak out against him. Chi must die.

Even though Cao Bien mastered the art of defending, Cao Bien was still defeated in Annam

Cao Bien was “famous” in Vietnam for his magic and cover-up games, “birth and death”, in the end he himself died from magic, although official history records that these games were caused by magic. presented by the wizard La Dung Chi.

In “Ling Nam Chic Quai” there is a story “Golden buffalo mark in Tien Du district” (present-day Bac Ninh) written about Cao Bien “good at numerology, knowledgeable in geography, often riding paper kites flying in the air to cover the winning places. scene…”.

The story “God of righteousness Long Do” tells that after finishing La Thanh, Bien met “a mutant wearing colorful clothes, strange-looking jewelry, riding a red dragon, floating in the clouds of smoke, with a great atmosphere, flying. up and down” claiming to be Long Do Vuong. Too scared, Cao Bien “set up a lute and used thousands of pounds of iron to cast statues in the shape of gods to make charms”. But when he read the incantation, suddenly the sky and earth became cloudy day and night, the rain and wind blew violently, the iron statue crumbled and flew into the air. Sea is afraid, has a desire to go to the North…

The story “Tan Vien Son Thanh” describes in detail the story of Cao Bien’s “covering up”: “When Cao Bien of the Tang Dynasty was in Annam, he wanted to cover up sacred places, so he cut open the stomach of his seventeen-year-old unmarried daughter and threw her intestines away. , stuffed wicker in the stomach, put on clothes, and sat on the throne, sacrificed with buffaloes and oxen. When he saw the movement, he swung his sword and cut off his head.” Bien used this technique to “apply” to harm the god Tan Vien, but only “sees Vuong riding a white horse in the clouds, spitting and leaving”. The stone pillar of Dam pagoda, according to legend, belongs to Cao Bien.

A vestige associated with the legend of Cao Bien remaining until now is a stone pillar (on top of Dam mountain (Bac Ninh) which is said to be a protective object. Legend has it that the Nam Son land around Dam mountain is the land of the pharaoh. With the dragon coiled tiger sitting, Bien built the stone column to break it, but the structure and shape of this stone column weighing over 50 tons is somewhat “contrary” to the legend: It is a stone dragon sculpture in the style However, researchers do not have enough evidence to confirm.

Another “Legend of Cao Bien’s tomb” tells that after the siege of Dai La failed, Bien was afraid of the spirit of the South but went south forever, as far as Phu Yen. When he came to a small coastal village, he saw that there was a dragon vein, so he lived here and helped people with many things, watching the land to build a house, build a grave… When he died, Bien was kindly buried by the villagers. Today, in Tuy An district, there are traces of Cao Bien’s tomb lying on a hill. That image is animated in the folk song: “Looking out to see Cao Bien’s tomb / Looking at Ma Lien, Chop Chai”.
