23 injured after tornado hits Texas as hurricane sweeps central US
Officials said nearly two dozen people were injured after a tornado hit a Texas county on Tuesday night.
A possible tornado was first reported just before 5:40 p.m. near the town of Salado, Bell County Judge David Blackburn said. It went about seven miles, and big trees fell and buildings were destroyed, he said.
“The damage, although significant, could certainly have been worse,” he told reporters, adding that he was grateful that there were no loss of life. .
Of the 23 injured, 12 were taken to an area hospital and one was in critical condition, he said. The remaining 11 people did not go to the hospital or were treated and released.
As severe storms swept through Texas, the National Weather Service warned of a confirmed tornado moving into southern Bell County, heading toward Salado. It urges people to seek shelter and get into the bath.
Authorities in Salado, which has a population of about 2,300, said in a statement that the tornado did not enter the town, about 50 miles north of Austin.
Blackburn said there was “not much more” in the path of the storm.

The weather service will send hurricane survey teams to Bell and Williamson counties Wednesday to determine the strength and path of the storm.
