Two people die in Houston after car crashes into Amtrak train
Two people were killed Saturday night in Houston after their car crashed into an Amtrak train when its driver tried to hit the train at a railroad crossing, police said.
The crash happened around 8 p.m. local time at Beaumont Expressway and Van Hut Alley, when the driver of the Chrysler 300 crossed his arms to signal the train was approaching, according to a notice from the Sheriff’s Office Mayor of Harris County, which also noted that the Red Light is flashing and the bell is activated at the junction to alert the train to arrival.
When colliding with the train, the car was engulfed in flames and the driver and passengers in the car were ejected. the police said. According to police, both died at the scene.
According to Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods, two passengers on the Amtrak train were taken to a local hospital.
Woods said the train from New Orleans to Los Angeles had 81 passengers on board at the time of the crash.
Amtrak is working with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office’s Vehicle Crime Division to investigate the crash, according to Woods and a statement from the sheriff’s office.
