Not only selling areca nut, Mr. Ha Van Dung also multiplies seedlings to sell and sells areca nut and every year his family collects billions of dong.

Planting thousands of areca trees to sell areca berries, seedlings, and areca, a family in Thanh Hoa has earned billions of dong per year.

That is Mr. Ha Van Dung (born in 1966) residing in Tro village, Giao An commune, Lang Chanh mountainous district (Thanh Hoa). The pioneer in developing the local economy from the area of ​​land planted with perennial crops such as longan, litchi, sugarcane… is not effective.

Mr. Dung said: Before, he worked as a trader of medicinal herbs, in 2005 he started to learn and nursed areca and in 2006 he planted 1,200 trees on his garden land.

Five years later (in 2011) the first areca trees were planted with high prices and stable output, so Mr. Dung continued to grow more varieties to expand the planting area.

Not only selling commercial areca nut to wholesalers and traders, but Mr. Dung also left ripe areca to nurse and sell to the people.

According to Mr. Dung, this year he nursed about 70,000 seedlings with the selling price of 25,000 VND/tree and the estimated fruit harvest this year (2022) is about 1 billion VND. Areca seeds are germinated and then put in plastic bags for 3-4 months until the plant has 2 leaves and 1 top, it will be sold.

According to Mr. Dung, in order to nurse the seedling, it will go through many stages such as ripening the areca, cutting it, drying it, then soaking, incubating until it sprouts and putting it in a plastic bag of soil.

Up to now, Mr. Dung’s family has about 5 hectares of areca plantations with an amount of about 13,000 trees. Of which, 600 trees have been harvested, and 2,000 trees are about to be harvested.

It is known that in 2021, Mr. Dung sold commercial areca fruit to traders for VND 500 million. In addition, he also left fruit to be sold in the market in 2022. Not only growing areca for fruit, selling seedlings, but areca is also sold by Mr. Dung to drugstores to make herbal medicine for 3,000 VND/mo.

On average, one areca tree per year gives Mr. Dung 20-35kg of fruit.

Mr. Dung’s areca garden also creates seasonal jobs for about 10 local workers with an income of 170,000 VND/day. Currently, it is not only Mr. Dung that grows areca, but he also encourages his brothers, family members and local people to participate in planting areca trees because of stable output and high selling price.

According to the local government, Mr. Dung’s model of growing areca and making areca seeds is the first model with the largest area in the locality.
