The tragic situation of the Doctor of Medicine who overcame poverty and entered a prestigious university

Zhang Jinsheng (54 years old, China) was a doctoral student in Medicine at Peking University but was unemployed for 18 years after graduating. He was called “the worst doctor of Peking University”.

Zhang Jinsheng was born in 1966 in Hunan into a poor farming family with 2 older sisters. Although his family was poor, his parents still gave him a decent education and paid for his school fees. Not serving his parents’ expectations, he entered the Department of Clinical Medicine at Hunan Medical University at the age of 18. Five years later, he graduated with honors and was assigned to work in a hospital. However, not long after Zhang Jinsheng started working, he was discovered to have a fear of blood, and even the smallest amount of blood would make him dizzy and nauseous.

Therefore, he decided to study further to focus on research, even though his family was already broke. Zhang Jinsheng successfully entered Peking University for master’s and doctorate studies, then graduated at the age of 32.

He went to work at a hospital again, but over the years, his hemophobia did not improve and he was unable to become a treating doctor. He can only do some errands in the hospital with a salary of just over 2,000 yuan (7.2 million dong). In the end, he resigned after 4 years working to study abroad but his family couldn’t afford it. Therefore, he returned to “cling to” his parents.

However, Zhang Jinsheng always had a dream of teaching at Peking University. In addition to farm work, Zhang Jinsheng devoted himself to his studies, he studied physics and mathematics, hoping to achieve something to be recruited by Peking University as a teacher. But now, Zhang Jinsheng has applied for “subsidy for extremely poor households” and become a “subsistence allowance household” to earn a living.
