The researchers looked at 40 different antivirus and cleaner apps with the highest ratings on the Play Store. All of them attracted more than 918 million downloads. Notably, only 2 apps did not contain any trackers, while 6 apps contained malicious links.
According to the rating system security from Cybernews, “Keep Clean Cleaner, Antivirus” got the highest score with a score of 54/100. Meanwhile, 2 applications “Safe Security – Antivirus, Booster, Phone Cleaner” and “Nova Security – Virus Cleaner” ranked last with scores of 9 and 10, respectively.
The software “Dr.Capsule Antivirus, Cleaner” contains up to 3 potentially malicious links. Other apps like “GO Security – Antivirus, AppLock, Booster” and “Virus Hunter 2021 Virus Scanner and Phone Cleaner” both have 2 malicious links.
“Regular Android smartphone users want to protect their phone from malware and care about keeping it running as fast as possible with cache or junk file cleaners. However, , many of the free apps available come with a hidden price, that users’ data can be tracked, sold, or unsafely managed,” the report said.
