Summer 2022, will the heat break as many records as 2020?

According to the results from the report The State of the Global Climate 2020 published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on December 2. According to this report, 2020 is one of the three hottest years on record, after 2016 and 2019. The average global temperature is about 1.2°C higher than pre-industrial times.

In Vietnam, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the heat wave that occurred in May 2020, the actual temperature in many places exceeded the historical threshold in May many years ago.

Specifically, only on May 21, 2020, many places have recorded historical temperatures such as: in Lao Cai city (Lao Cai) the temperature was 41 degrees Celsius, the highest in 64 years; Bac Me (Ha Giang) temperature 40.4 degrees Celsius, the highest in 54 years; Tinh Gia (Thanh Hoa) has a temperature of 41.2 degrees Celsius, the highest in 47 years; Ha Dong (Hanoi) has a temperature of 40.9 degrees Celsius, the highest in May in 59 years.

Talking to the press, Dr. Hoang Phuc Lam, deputy director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that along with prolonged heat, drought also set new records. The prolonged hot weather combined with a serious shortage of rainfall compared to the average for many years has pushed the central provinces into a record dry season, equivalent to or even more so than 2019 – the driest year on record. history.

Even in the early days of summer, many people also question, will this year’s weather have severe heat waves and will the temperature exceed the historical threshold of many years ago?

Recently, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has made comments on the weather trend in the next 5 months (from May to October 2022).

According to meteorologists, from now to the end of 2022, it is forecasted that in the East Sea area there will be about 10-12 storms and tropical depression, of which are likely to directly affect our country about 4-6 storms. lower to approximately equal to that of the average state (about 12-14 attacks, directly affecting about 5-7 attacks).

In the months of the rainy and stormy season, in the North region, the rainfall tends to be higher than the average, in case heavy rains are likely to occur from about June to August. However, in the Central Highlands and the South, the rainfall tends to be less than the average. From about October, in the Central region, there is a tendency to increase rainfall.

In addition, according to the meteorological center, in the summer of 2022, the heat in the North and Central regions is likely to appear later than average. The intensity of the heat is also not as intense and lasting as in 2020.

Specifically: The Northern region from May-July and October 2022, the common temperature is approximately equal to the average of many years (average); From August to September 2022, the common temperature is 0.5-1 degrees Celsius higher than the average.

In the Central region, from May-June and October 2022, the common temperature is approximately equal to that of the Central Highlands, from July-September 2022, the common temperature is 0.5-1.0 higher.0C compared to the specific average in the North Central region, the temperature in July 2022 is approximately the same as the average temperature.

In the Central Highlands and the South, from May-June 2022, the common temperature is approximately equal to that of the Central Highlands, from July-October 2022, the common temperature is 0.0-0.5 higher.0C compared with TBNN.

Meanwhile, floods in the North are common in the second half of the flood season (August). From June to October 2022, floods in rivers in the Central region and the Central Highlands appear.

In May 2022, saline intrusion in the Mekong Delta tends to decrease gradually. From June to October 2022, is the flood season on the Mekong River and the headwaters of the Mekong River. The flood peak in 2022, at the upstream of the Mekong River, is likely to be at BD1 and above BD1, 0.3-0.5m lower than the average flood peak.

From June 2022, due to the possibility of strong southwest monsoon, in the waters off the southern region, waves can reach 2-3m, causing rough seas. Coastal areas in the North, North and Central Central region should pay attention to watch out for large waves combined with rising water due to the influence of storms in August-October 2022.
