A new assessment of a rare cold air wave “only occurs in 10 years” is about to happen

According to Nguyen Van Huong, Head of the Climate Forecasting Department of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, around May 14, cold air will affect the North of our country, causing widespread thunderstorms in the southern provinces. In the North and Central region, there is moderate rain locally, from heavy to very heavy rain, lasting until about May 16.

It is forecasted that the lowest temperature in the mountains may drop below 16 degrees, in the Northern Delta (including Hanoi) from 20-23 degrees. Cold air also causes strong winds of level 6, level 7, level 8 in the Gulf of Tonkin and the central sea.

According to Mr. Huong, this cold air wave is similar to the cold air wave that swept over our country in 2011, which means it only happens once every 10 years.

The North is about to receive rare cold air

Notably, according to Mr. Huong, before catching cold air, the North is also experiencing a thunderstorm, which is forecasted to last from now until May 14, in which the Northern midlands and mountains have moderate rainfall. , heavy rain, the time of rain mainly concentrates in the evening and at night. There is a high risk of lightning storms, hail and strong winds, along with the risk of flash floods, landslides in the Northern mountainous region.

According to Mr. Huong, in May, cold air still affects the North of our country, but mainly thunderstorms, the temperature decreases slightly. Therefore, the coming cold air wave on May 14 is considered rare.

Mr. Huong added that, after the upcoming northeast monsoon, in May, the North still has weak cold air waves that cause rain, showers and thunderstorms.

It is forecasted that from now until the end of May and the beginning of June, the temperature in the North and the North Central will tend to be lower than the average for many years. It is not until the second half of June, July, and the first half of August that the North and North Central regions enter the summer season with possible heat waves and intense heat waves. This summer is considered to be less intense and prolonged than the summer of 2020-2021.
