America has a crisis of milk powder shortage
According to CNN, the US is facing a shortage of milk powder due to high demand and manufacturers, even though they are running at full capacity, cannot meet the people’s thirst for milk.
Datasembly’s data shows that the shortage of milk powder stocks in the whole US in the first half of 2021 was only about 2-8%, but by the beginning of April 2022, this number jumped to 31%. After that, the ratio increased by 9 percentage points to reach 40% in the following 3 weeks.
In six states, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, Missouri, Texas and Tennessee, more than half of all infant formula was sold out in the last week of April.
According to CNN, there are currently about 26 US states that are facing difficulties because they do not have enough powdered milk to meet demand.
Datasembly CEO Ben Reich said that the main reason for the above situation is supply chain disruptions as well as high inflation that are causing difficulties for the consumer manufacturing industry in the US.
Responding to CNN, supermarket chains CVS and Walgreens admitted that they were limiting customers nationwide to only 3 boxes of baby formula per bill.
“We are actively working with suppliers to meet customer needs,” a Walgreens representative told CNN.
Meanwhile, Target has also had to limit buyers to only 4 boxes of powdered milk for each online order. However, the company has not imposed a limit on people who buy directly at Target supermarkets.
On social media, US consumers are frantically sharing images showing the country’s largest supermarket chain, Walmart, imposing limits on the purchase of baby formula, although the brand has not yet commented. Photos taken by CNN show that the shelves selling baby formula are empty with the notice that each person can only buy 5 boxes maximum.
