The train runs entirely on wind energy This 22 m long, two masts, carrying 8,000 bottles of organic wine from the northwest coast of France to the port of Elizabeth, New Jersey, USA on the night of 8/5. The transatlantic voyage lasted about 24 days.

Matthieu Riou, of the French wine company Grain De Sail, shared:Grain de Sail’s mission is truly to reinvent the shipping industry by sailing to reduce its environmental impact. We only use the wind to reduce carbon emissions“.

Grain de Sail’s ship sold wine in New York City, then shipped humanitarian aid to the Dominican Republic and took 37 tons of cocoa powder and coffee beans back to France. The ship periodically makes two transatlantic voyages per year, the cargo capacity of each trip is about 50 tons.

Currently, freight transport generates about 2.5% of the total volume greenhouse gas emissions globally and is projected to increase from 50% to 250% by 2050 if there is no change.

Grain de Sail says its business model using sustainable transport is profitable, even now it is not able to meet all the demand. The company is building another ship, twice the size of the current one and will make four transatlantic voyages per year.

Francois Lenaoures, sailor and photographer of the Grain De Sail, affirmed:We show others that freight can be completely green, just takes more time“.
