Vietnam consults car safety recommendations for children

Recommendations related to car safety equipment for children will be contributed to the development of legal regulations on traffic safety in Vietnam.

The scientific conference on “Safety equipment in cars for children” was jointly organized by the University of Public Health, the National Traffic Safety Committee and the World Health Organization (WHO). This is one of the first seminars held to raise public awareness as well as make recommendations to authorities on car safety for children.

According to a study by the Center for Policy Research and Injury Prevention – University of Public Health, the rapid increase of car ownership is directly proportional to the risk of unsafety for road users. As society develops, the demand for using personal vehicles also increases. On average, there will be about 400,000 new registered cars every year, an increase of about 10% per year, leading to an increase in traffic accidents.

Experts say that currently, Vietnam has no mandatory regulations on the safety of children’s equipment and positions in cars. According to statistics, the use of safety devices (CRS) for children is extremely low, only 1.3% of children are using it, mainly in big cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Besides, the situation of children sitting in the front seat alone is common – 22.8%. This is one of the warnings for us to issue legal regulations on safety devices for children in cars.
