Engineer soldiers catch fish and find vegetables at the UNISFA mission

In order to ensure a fresh food source, the Logistics Division searched for fenugreek, nettle, and loofah and fished tilapia in the lake at Abyei (UNISFA).

As a general rule for UN peacekeeping operations, a new deployment will take care of its own logistics during the initial period due to a certain delay in the UN ordering system. For Vietnam’s 1st Engineer Squadron, the logistics were prepared from within the country and the members carried their personal luggage, combined with the use of canteens at UN transfer bases, eg Entebbe/Uganda, Kadugli (Sudan).

When arriving at Abyei of the UNISFA Mission, where the 1st Engineer Squadron was stationed, the logistics detachment studied a plan to ensure fresh and green food on the spot, not only to satisfy the 28 members of the advance detachment of the Congregation. 1, but also for a team of 156 people will arrive in May.

Regarding green vegetables, because the local people do not grow and the market does not sell, while the mission’s supply is also limited due to the long distance of transportation and difficult cold storage, the unit mainly receives some types of corn such as corn. cabbage, large peppers, potatoes… When the vegetables arrive, the unit has to remove about 30-50% because of damage.

Thanks to the resourcefulness of Mr. Nguyen Van Anh, the kitchen manager and the staff of the front-line group, the soldiers exploited green vegetables to put into the meal such as rice bran, nettles, morning glory, loofah flower tops, etc. Going to exercise in the helipad area, they discovered two old tamarind trees with lots of fruit. Each time, the soldiers collected about half a sack to cook the sour soup gradually.

In addition to green vegetables, the Vietnamese army organizes fishing in the lake in the UNISFA Mission. In the morning of last weekend, Mr. Ngo Duy Dinh and some brothers caught more than 10 kg of large tilapia. This is an important source of fresh food and can last for a long time.

According to the Commander of the 1st Engineer Squadron, in the immediate future, the engineer soldiers borrowed floating boards from local staff working for the Mission to use instead of boats. When the engineering team’s equipment arrives, the team will organize an iron boat not only to catch fish but also to use it when the rainy season comes. It is expected that most of the Abyei area will be flooded by 0.5-1 m in 2-3 months.

South Sudan.

Abyei is a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan. The two countries signed an Agreement on June 20, 2011, committing to withdraw troops from the demilitarized zone at Abyei and establish a joint mechanism to resolve the issue. However, so far the two countries have not made much substantive progress. UNISFA was established in 2011 under Security Council Resolution 1990 with the mandate to protect civilians and promote demilitarization in Abyei.
