3 benefits from not using the refrigerator

My refrigerator has been on strike for 2 years now! Thanks to that, I discovered how minimalist living mine.

Initially, I went to work every day, rarely going to the kitchen to cook, so the lack of a refrigerator was not difficult at all.

Later, the thought that life is more inconvenient when the kitchen lacks a refrigerator, but the opposite is true, I still live very well. I began to “burn” with all my might, practice cooking, take care of myself three meals a day, with almost no effect at all.

So far, I have given up on the idea of repairing the refrigerator or buying a new one. For me, this is considered a new step in minimalist living.

1. No Refrigerator: Almost no chance of wasting food.

The above damaged refrigerator is the second one that I have ever used. In the beginning, I bought a two-door refrigerator, which was full of food for a whole week, even a fortnight or a month. And then, handling expired or spoiled foods was common during those times. The reason is simple, because I do not use all of it, even forgetting the existence of many foods.

Especially meat. I don’t like to eat meat, nor do I like to cook. But for the sake of health, just buy and fill the refrigerator. As a result, those chunks of meat are frozen solid in the fridge for up to 2-3 months. Green vegetables also suffer the same fate, not only withered but also moldy and smelly.

Then I switched to a smaller one-door refrigerator. But still can’t get rid of the habit of wasting food.

Now that I think about it, I understand, buying and eating are two completely different things. Buying is easy; Just a minute of enthusiastically imagining how many delicious dishes you can buy back. But eating is more complicated, need to prepare, then cook, and then wash the dishes, clean the kitchen. So for someone who doesn’t like to cook like me, not having a refrigerator is the right decision.

At least for now, I don’t have a chance to waste food. Just think about 3 meals in advance for the next day tonight. Go to the market to buy enough food for a day.

Since I don’t have a refrigerator, I can’t preserve food, so I always try to make the most of it. Leftover vegetables can be pickled. The meat is dry roasted, so it won’t spoil for a few days. When I think back, I realize how much I respect my hard work and achievements.

2. No refrigerator: Eat only fresh food.

In the past, I used to buy food for the whole week, balancing nutrition and preferences. Once I go to the supermarket, I bring it home with my armpits. Sorting, tidying up… but in the end, it’s not used up, wasted half of it. Waste of money and wasted effort.

Now there is no refrigerator, it is imperative that food purchased every day must be eaten that day. The story of buying a lot of food to freeze and then use it gradually has gone into the past. Food bought and used within the same day is of course fresh and delicious. Moreover, this also saves me a lot.

The portion of each meal is just enough so I can control my weight. Looks much better than before.

3. No refrigerator: Thoroughly give up the habit of hoarding food.

Hoarding is human nature. The refrigerator does not have enough food, food is not secure, standing still. In other words, adequate food is also a kind of sense of security.

It’s not wrong to stock up on food and drink. Just like the habits of some Westerners. They buy canned food with a long shelf life and store it in the cellar. This habit stems from fear of unexpected disasters, or simply from satisfying a sense of security in their hearts.

You can store food, but with the condition that the shelf life is long. Most importantly, you must use them up if you don’t want to be seen as wasted.

For me, now there is no longer a habit of hoarding food. In the house, there is no longer the smell of food too much. Just like life, food is fresh every day. If you want to eat something, go buy it and go to the kitchen to cook.

My fridge is still there, it just hasn’t been used for a long time!
