Anh Tho: ‘I don’t need a man’
Anh Tho said that at the age of 46, she finds joy in music, takes care of her children, and doesn’t put too much emphasis on love.
The singer is about to perform a live show on June 23 at the Viet-Xo Friendship Cultural Palace (Hanoi). On this occasion, she shared about her work and life.
– At the age of 40, how do you enjoy every day?
– In addition to my passion for singing and teaching, I spend time having coffee with friends, traveling with my daughter. At home, I enjoy cooking and cleaning the house. Before, I did everything by myself, and recently hired a maid. Many colleagues and students say that I am too simple, do not love, take little care of myself. The children invited me to go to the dentist, go to the spa to relax. Although sponsored, free of money, I refused because I didn’t like it. I recently exercised, took some supplements, vitamins. I’m lucky to have good health, that’s enough.
– What difficulties do you face as a single mother?
– I am an independent, hard-working person who earns money, so I live well. When I was a child, I came from a farmer’s family and did all kinds of hard farm work. Later, I went to Hanoi to set up a business, doing everything I did alone, my family far away could not support me.
After getting divorced about 5 years ago, I see that living alone has many advantages, everything is on my own initiative, not dependent on anyone, no matter what the families of both sides think. My children still communicate with their biological father, and I keep a normal, not too close relationship with him.

– What do you think about walking again?
– I definitely won’t get married again. Love is also good, makes life more poetic. But for me, love between men and women is always behind children and careers. The children are very open, civilized, telling me to feel free to go with whoever I like. However, it is not easy to meet the right person. I do not need a man, do not actively seek love.
– Many people find their other half at the age of 50. Why don’t you believe in love?
I think it’s everyone’s destiny. With my ex-husband, I went through an eight-year relationship before getting married, but still broke up. I am a U50 woman now, my youth and beauty are all gone. Many people love a singer who shines on stage, but few can love an Anh Tho wearing a home suit, cooking, cleaning the kitchen and toilet. When we take off all the makeup, fancy clothes, and fame, we will know who truly loves us. I don’t think anyone can have everything. I have a voice, the audience is a precious thing.

– How do you bond with your children?
– I have two daughters, the oldest has gone to university, the youngest is in grade 6, both understand the story. I try to be friends with him by talking about everything big and small. Sometimes, my parents go abroad to travel. I am not too strict or imposing. When I want my child to change something, I will talk every day, it rains for a long time.
The eldest daughter has grown up, I don’t need to tell you much. With my youngest friend, I still pay attention to the child’s physiology at puberty. I know he does like his classmates, but it’s just a little above friendship. The first time I saw him put on lipstick, I knew he wanted to pose with friends, so I teased him. Kids these days are bolder than our generation. I remember when I was in the ninth grade when I knew how to vibrate. In grade 12, if we fell in love, we would only dare to talk from afar. If my child is really in love, I will also forbid it like many other parents.

– How do you plan the career for your two children?
– I respect the preferences and choices of the two children. In academic matters, I am not too demanding, and my children are not excellent. Studying well does not necessarily determine success for everyone. Everything depends on many factors, including luck. I once said: “If you finish high school, you want to do something but don’t go to university, my mother still supports it. Vocational training will give you valuable experiences.”
The children rarely show off their mother as a singer. I also don’t like flaunting my profession. After nearly a year, my teacher suddenly asked: “You seem to be Anh Tho singer, right?”. I am also a normal person, do not want to create unnecessary attention on my children. The oldest has gone to another industry, the youngest has not yet shown a special talent for music. However, I think it is too early to talk about the possibility of children. When I was in middle school, I didn’t sing very well either, I only got third place in school exams, I never thought I would become a singer.
Many times, I want my child to follow the same events to better understand what my mother does, but he is afraid to go. The youngest friend is not interested in folk music and does not listen to his mother’s music. In class, some of you said you admire your mother, but you are indifferent. I like listening to rap, watching K-pop, Son Tung M-TP, the Korean boy band BTS. Sometimes, I don’t remember, mistakenly called FPT group, I get angry. I find that from an entertainment perspective, these songs are easy to listen to and amusing, so I let them enjoy them comfortably.
Anh Tho’s real name is Le Thi Tho, born in 1976 in Thanh Hoa. She graduated from Vietnam National Academy of Music, famous for folk and chamber music. The singer won the first prize of Hanoi Television Singing 1998, the third prize of the National Television Singing Festival 1999, the second prize of the National Chamber Music of 2000… She and Trong Tan are a good duet together. appeared on many stages at home and abroad. Anh Tho currently teaches at the Vietnam National Academy of Music.
