The People’s Education Publishing House (PEP) on May 26 issued a statement promising to redesign the illustrations, after their textbooks became the most discussed topic on the online platform. China’s Weibo social network.

Others posted illustrations from textbooks in which boys appeared with outlines around male genitalia on their pants, accusing it of pornography.

Some have even accused the illustration of children wearing clothes with stars and stripes as being pro-American. One user wrote: “There are definitely traitors lurking somewhere. Pro-American elements have infiltrated our education system.”

The People’s Education Publishing House says it has begun redoing the illustrations.

“We sincerely welcome good opinions and suggestions from all walks of life,” the publisher said in the statement.
