“My students were watching a movie on television on the morning of May 24 as part of the closing ceremony for the school year, when gunfire in the hallway. Then I knew what I had to do. I called the children to quickly get under the table and lock the door to the classroom. The students did exactly what they were told,” the unnamed teacher working at Robb Elementary School in Texas, USA told NBC news site.

“Our students have been training for this situation for years. You know this is not a rehearsal. According to the unnamed teacher, the students had to hide under the desk while many injured students were groaning in the hallway, and she had to sit on the floor in the middle of the class and try to stay calm. “It was the longest 35 minutes of my life,” the teacher said.

Some of the students started crying, so she motioned for them to sit next to her. She hugged and reminded the children to pray silently. She tries to convey to the whole class that “you are all right. We’ll be fine.”

Finally, the police approached from outside the classroom and broke the windows. The teacher asked the students to line up quickly but in an orderly fashion, just like they usually do at lunch and break time every day.

“I held hands and helped each student out the window. After the last one, I turned around to make sure all the students were out of the classroom. I know I have to leave quickly, but I won’t leave until I know for sure that no one is left,” the teacher said.

According to NBC, the teacher on the afternoon of May 24 met with the students again and tried to comfort many of them who were worried about their classmates being attacked. After the victims were announced, some parents texted the teacher: “Thank you for keeping our children safe.”
