Scientists collected data on more than 170,000 Britons and found that the regular coffee drinkers were 30 per cent less likely to die young than the rest.

Dr Dan Liu, Southern Medical University (China), said: “Our study found that adults who drank a moderate amount of sugary coffee per day had a lower risk of dying from any cause about 30% more than those who don’t drink.

According to the survey, coffee drinkers face a lower risk of cancer or heart disease.

The analysis followed middle-aged people in the UK from 2009 to 2018 to see their risk of death over a seven-year period.

Accordingly, drinking black coffee without sugar reduces the risk by 16 to 21%. Drinking between 1.5 and 3.5 cups per day plus a teaspoon of sugar reduced the risk by 29 to 31%.

Coffee is good for health because it contains many antioxidants that help prevent cells and chemicals from harming the body.

Previous studies have found coffee drinkers may have lower-than-normal rates of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and liver disease.

Dr. Liu said the study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, is the first to demonstrate that even sugary coffee can be healthy.

But the authors warn, adding extra milk and sugar in takeout drinks — or drinking more than 4.5 cups of sugary coffee a day — can be overdone and cancel out the benefits.

Dr Christina Wee, Associate Editor of the journal, added: “Coffee is thought to exert an antioxidant effect through both its caffeine content and chlorogenic acid.”

“As for unsweetened coffee, those who drank about three cups a day had the lowest risk. For the sugary variety, the group that drank about two cups a day had the lowest risk.”

Dr Duane Mellor, a registered dietitian at Aston University, said: “This suggests that moderate coffee consumption can be beneficial. However, it should be noted that side dishes such as do you use cookies or not?”.

A spokesperson for the British Coffee Association said: “Scientific evidence concludes that moderate coffee consumption of four to five cups a day can contribute to a healthy, balanced diet. , bring many health benefits”.
