Compartment syndrome occurs when excessive pressure builds up inside an enclosed space in the body. Compartment syndrome is usually caused by bleeding or swelling following trauma. The high pressure in compartment syndrome interferes with the flow of blood to and from the affected tissues. It can be an emergency, requiring surgery to prevent permanent injury.

Cavity syndrome causes

Acute compartment syndrome is the most common type of compartment syndrome. In about three-quarters of cases, acute compartment syndrome is caused by a broken leg or arm. Acute compartment syndrome develops rapidly over hours or days.

Compartment syndrome can develop from the wound itself, due to pressure from bleeding and edema. Or compartment syndrome may occur later, as a result of fracture treatment (such as surgery or a cast).

Acute compartment syndrome can also occur after non-fracture trauma, including:

– Burns

– The bandage is too tight

– Prolonged compression of a limb during unconsciousness

– Vascular surgery of the arm or leg

A blood clot in a blood vessel in an arm or leg

– Exercising too vigorously, especially eccentric movements

Anabolic steroid abuse can also contribute to the development of compartment syndrome

Another form of compartment syndrome, called chronic compartment syndrome, develops over days or weeks. This is also known as exercise compartment syndrome, and it can be caused by regular vigorous exercise. This type of syndrome involves the lower legs, buttocks, or thighs.

Compartment syndrome symptoms

Acute compartment syndrome usually develops within hours of a severe injury to the hand or foot. Some symptoms of compartment syndrome include:

– Persistent pain in the arm or leg

– Numbness, pins and needles in the limbs

– Swollen, tight and bruised limbs

Treatment of compartment syndrome

The treatments for compartment syndrome focus on reducing the dangerous pressure in the body cavity. The bandage, cast, or splint that is constricting the affected body part must be removed.

Most people with acute compartment syndrome require immediate surgery to relieve compartment pressure. The surgeon makes a long incision through the skin and underlying fascia, releasing excess pressure.

Other supportive treatments include:

– Keeping the body part below the heart’s position (to improve blood flow into the cavity)

– Give oxygen through the nose or mouth

– Intravenous infusion

– Take painkillers
