Shooting in the US, at least 3 people died
Three people were killed and 11 injured in one incident shootings in a neighborhood south of Philadelphia, USA on the night of June 4.
US police said they saw a man shoot into a crowd near an intersection around midnight and an officer returned fire.
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney condemned the latest mass shooting in the US, calling it “another horrible, shameless and despicable act of gun violence”. He also mentioned the “increase in gun violence over the last few years” in Philadelphia alone as well as nationally America.
“I know this shooting has shocked our community. The safety of residents and visitors is a top priority,” he said. The mayor of Philadelphia confirmed the government was working with police to “reduce violence and create safer communities.”
No one has been arrested in connection with the latest shooting in Philadelphia. Two guns were found at the scene and police are said to be searching for surveillance videos from business owners along the street in the hopes of identifying the attacker. This is the 10th mass shooting reported in Philadelphia over the weekend.
On the evening of June 3, a 20-year-old pregnant woman was found shot in the head. The woman died an hour after police found the baby, and the baby is said to be in a stable condition. A 15-year-old boy was also shot that night in west Philadelphia. He is still alive and in stable condition.
On the afternoon of June 4, a 23-year-old man was found shot in the chest at the Susquehanna-Dauphin metro station. The victim was taken to the hospital and remains in critical condition. This man is said to have had a melee with the gunman outside the station.
Also over the weekend, a 58-year-old man was found shot in the chest inside a vehicle in west Philadelphia and taken to a hospital. In the city’s Nicetown neighborhood, a 38-year-old man was shot repeatedly after an argument at a nightclub and was left in critical condition. A 23-year-old man was shot in the elbow in north Philadelphia, while a 21-year-old was shot in the left leg on the evening of June 3 in the Olney neighborhood. A 23-year-old man was shot twice on the night of June 3 in west Philadelphia.
No arrests were made in any of the shootings over the weekend.
Philadelphia set a record for homicides last year, with 561 homicides – up 13% from 2020. The vast majority (89%) involved firearms, and most of the victims were men of color. ages 18 to 34. The previous record for homicides occurred in 1990, when 500 murders took place in the city. Philadelphia recorded its 100th homicide in March of this year.
