Rare: Twins born 3 days apart

Carmen Martinex, living in Abilene, Texas, USA gave birth to her first baby girl Gabriella at 24 weeks and 4 days of pregnancy. But just three days later, she gave birth to another baby girl, Isabella.

Carmen Martinex started showing signs of labor a week before her first baby was born.

She was hospitalized and gave birth, doctors advised to stay at the hospital to take care of her, trying to nurture the second baby in her belly.

Carmen Martinex shared: “I’m not too hurt. The doctor told me I have two separate placentas, two separate amniotic sacs to feed two babies. One baby’s amniotic sac broke, the other baby is still intact.”

However, only a short time, 3 days after the birth of the first baby, Carmen Martinex gave birth to a second baby girl.

A woman’s pregnancy usually lasts about 40 weeks. In the days before Isabella was born, Carmen Martinex could still feel the baby moving in her belly.

“Isabella has her own party, her own space, she certainly had a good time alone before she was born. But I was also surprised that she was born so early,” Carmen Martinex said.

James L Tadvick, the doctor who directly cared for Carmen Martinex, said: “This is the first case I have encountered a strange twin birth in my many years of work. This is a very rare birth. Two girls born prematurely have about a 30% chance of survival because they are both very young.”

The two girls were born three days apart, each weighing about 680 grams. Carmen Martinex’s family is shocked by her strange birth.

Both infants had to stay in the hospital for intensive care while Carmen Martinex returned to the motel and worked.

Carmen Martinex said she felt shocked and had some emotional problems when she had to temporarily say goodbye to her children. But she must return home to prepare the best to welcome her son back.

Fortunately for the twins, both were discharged from the hospital after 3 months of intensive care.

Currently, Gabriella weighs 2.1 kg and Isabella weighs 2.04 kg, which is a feat with both twins in an exceptionally rare birth in the world.
