News about the death of a female patient during breast augmentation at 1A hospital

Talking to a reporter of Tien Phong newspaper, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tr. (35 years old) said that the younger sister of Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Nh. (33 years old, from Chau Thanh district, Dong Thap province) is the victim of the incident.

Previously, through the introduction of relatives, Ms. Ngoc Nh. contacted and was consulted by Dr. Nguyen Van Thiet, who is working at a cosmetology facility in Ho Chi Minh City, about beauty services. The patient was scheduled to have surgery on March 18 at Hospital 1A by the doctor. On the appointed day, Ms. Ngoc Nh. went to the hospital at 8:30 am to see the doctor and enter the surgery.

Ms. Ngoc Tr. “My sister has a history of asthma. I know that before breast augmentation surgery, the doctors conducted a CT scan of the heart and did preoperative tests. At 11:30, my brother went to surgery. At 16:11 on the same day, Dr. Thiet called to invite me to the hospital because “there is something to talk about”. Feeling that something was wrong, my family and I rushed to the hospital. When he saw the doctor, he said, “My brother is in the ICU and his condition is very serious.”

However, the doctor did not specifically inform the family about the details of the surgery. “I suggested to the doctor that if my brother was in serious condition, he would transfer him to a higher-level hospital, but they disagreed, saying that there are doctors at the hospital who are trying their best to save him. However, at 6 p.m., I asked to meet and saw that my brother’s body was purple … dead “- the deceased sister’s exasperation.

Clarifying the cause

After the patient died, the police agency accepted the case and took steps to investigate to clarify the cause. However, the family said that they were prevented from accessing professional information related to the patient’s death.

“We believe that this is not a mere medical incident but may be the negligence of the main surgeon and the hospital side. They did not transfer to the hospital in time, but deliberately concealed when my brother progressed so badly that he died. My family has invited a lawyer to participate to protect the legitimate rights and interests of my brother” – Ms. Ngoc Tr. speak.

On March 19, the investigating agency conducted an autopsy to find the cause of death. On March 20, the deceased’s body was handed over to the family to take care of the aftermath. Dr. Ngo Anh Tuan, Deputy Director of 1A Hospital, confirmed that the incident happened at the hospital, but he refused to comment on the cause of death of the patient.

On March 19, 1A Hospital sent an initial report to the management agency and the Medical Examination and Treatment Administration of the Ministry of Health. Accordingly, female patients underwent breast reconstruction surgery with gel bags; Anesthesia method is endotracheal anesthesia.

The surgeon for the patient is Nguyen Van Thiet, who has a practicing certificate issued by the Ministry of Health to supplement the scope of medical examination and treatment specializing in plastic surgery and has a labor contract with Hospital 1A. Anesthesiologist and resuscitation doctor is Vo Van Tuan, who has a certificate of medical examination and treatment specializing in anesthesiology and resuscitation, and has a labor contract with 1A Hospital.

The female patient had respiratory arrest during surgery. The medical team was treated with emergency treatment and resuscitated the patient according to the correct procedure. However, the disease progressed too seriously, the patient did not survive the danger.

Regarding the above incident, information from the Department of Health of Ho Chi Minh City said that 1A Hospital is a hospital directly under the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs.
