On Twitter, Mr. Yermak wrote: “Kiev hopes Beijing will play a more prominent role. We are looking for a phone call between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Chinese President Xi Jinping.”

Earlier, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba also called on Beijing to play an important role in resolving the Ukraine situation.

On March 21, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said that all sides should jointly support and encourage dialogue between Russia and Ukraine to restore peace, and at the same time the US-Treaty Organization The North Atlantic (NATO) needs to engage in dialogue with Russia to allay current security concerns.

In another development, the United Nations General Assembly (UN) is scheduled to hold a second emergency session on March 23 (March 24 in Vietnam time) and may adopt a resolution calling on Russia to stop firing, withdrawing troops and facilitating humanitarian relief work.

The United Nations General Assembly held its first emergency session on Ukraine on March 2 and passed a resolution calling on Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine with 141 out of 193 votes.

Although UN General Assembly resolutions are symbolic and not binding like Security Council resolutions, they still carry a certain political weight and no country has the right to veto.

Meanwhile, Security Council resolutions can be vetoed by one of the five permanent members including the UK, US, France, Russia and China.

According to a diplomatic source, the content of the second UN General Assembly resolution will also call on Russia to end its siege of some Ukrainian cities, especially Mariupol.
