What was once considered a pipe dream is getting closer to reality, after scientists found a way to reverse the aging process in aged mice with as few side effects as possible. They predict the technology will be ready for human use in a few decades.

Dr. Andrew Steele, biologist and author of “No Age: The Science of Increasing Age Without Getting Old”, believes that clinical trials of reversing aging in who will soon take place and achieve achievements in the next 50 years’ time.

Sharing the same opinion, Professor Jurd Bahler, a geneticist at University College London (UK), predicts this breakthrough technology could help prolong life up to 150 years. The current average life expectancy for men and women in the UK is 79 years and 82.9 years, respectively. Meanwhile, the life cycle of children born in the US in 2020 is significantly lower, averaging 74.2 years for men and 79.9 years for women.

The experts’ comments above come a few weeks after a team of scientists at the Salk Institute in San Diego (USA) “reversed” the aging process in middle-aged and middle-aged mice. seniors thanks to cell rejuvenation techniques.

They attempted to partially reset mouse cells to a younger state using four molecules called Yamanaka transcription factors.

Some previous cell rejuvenation experiments have caused mice to develop cancer or organ failure. However, this condition did not occur in the new University experiment to develop cancer or organ failure but this did not happen in the new Salk Institute experiment.

The same team also confirmed that the treatment would be safe in humans, based on positive signals in mice. According to the study results, it may take a treatment period of 7-10 months to prevent unwanted side effects of the aging process.

In addition to reversing the human circadian clock, it is also expected to help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Professor Bahler said that while previous life-spanning measures made people live longer but were sicker, reversing the aging process of cells would not cause this side effect. “There has been a significant increase in life expectancy over the past 200 years, from 30-40 years to the current 80 years,” he said. But the problem is that people live longer and are weaker. They can still get cancer when they reach a certain age.”

According to him, if we can change the core of the aging process, people will live longer and healthier lives.
However, Dr. Andrew Steele said that aging is a complex process and cell rejuvenation is not the only solution to prolonging life. “Remember proteins like collagen. It’s the most abundant protein in your body, and as you age, it changes function. Collagen is on the outside of your cells, so rejuvenating the cells isn’t likely to change it.”
