During the night, a 15-year-old schoolgirl is raped and brutally murdered by people she trusts.

Death in the desert

On the night of May 31, 1964, Charles Schmid drove his girlfriend Mary French, best friend John Saunders and 15-year-old schoolgirl Alleen Rowe to the desert to drink and talk. The 15-year-old schoolgirl appeared happy without knowing that something terrible was about to happen to her.

At Charles’s suggestion, the four walked into the desert to find a place to sit and talk. After a while, Charles asked his girlfriend to go back to the car to get the radio and listen to music.

When there were only 3 people left, Charles told John to put his hand over Alleen’s mouth and he used a rope to tie the girl’s hand to her surprise. Alleen then asked why the two men did it, to which Charles replied, “Mary wanted us to. She hates you.”

Alleen tried to resist and was led by Charles deeper into the desert. At first, Charles told you to rape Alleen, but John couldn’t because the girl was crying too much. Seeing this, Charles immediately told his friend to avoid and when John turned, he saw Alleen redressing.

Charles then picks up a sharp-edged stone and gives it to John to finish the schoolgirl, but John can’t carry out the plan and leaves the car to find Mary. Moments later, John returned to find Alleen lying on her back on the ground, her face and head covered in blood. Charles’s sleeves and shirt were also bloody.

When Mary returned, Charles lied that John had beaten Alleen, then the three of them shoveled a shallow grave and dumped Alleen’s body and Charles’ shirt there. Finished, the three returned to the car to clean up the traces and agreed that if asked, they would say that they went to pick them up that night but the female student had not returned.

The next morning, nurse Norma Rowe, Alleen’s mother, came home from her night shift in panic when she couldn’t see her baby and called the police after days of no leads. Norma said that when she went to work, Alleen was already in bed getting ready for bed.

Meanwhile, her father calls his wife and tells her that he dreamed of his daughter being murdered and hiding her body in the desert. However, despite extensive searches, the police still could not find the whereabouts of the schoolgirl. The victim’s relatives even went to the psychic but to no avail.

Authorities speculated that the girl had run away from home. The disappearance case quickly closed to make room for other cases.

The rebellious girl

John Saunders later joined the Navy. Charles immediately had another best friend, Richie Bruns – a taciturn, dropped out of school in 10th grade and had just left the reformatory.

In July 1964, Charles noticed a 16-year-old blonde girl named Gretchen Fritz. The other boys told Charles that anyone who got involved with Gretchen would be in trouble, but that only made Charles more curious.

During a follow-up home, Charles realizes that she lives in a luxurious mansion in the upper-class neighborhood. Her father is a doctor, a heart and thoracic specialist, and also a board member of a bank. Gretchen is like the “lost person” of this family, always rebellious and destructive, having weird ideas.

Charles approached Gretchen by posing as a salesman so he could enter Gretchen’s house. He later confesses that it was all a scheme he made up to see her. Gretchen was very emotional. They started dating although Charles also gave his girlfriend Mary and another girl engagement rings. He both promised them marriage, although the real purpose was to motivate them to work and deposit money into accounts for his use.

And that was also the beginning of a deadly plan.
