Thu Dao (SN 1992, Binh Dinh) and Van Luong (SN 1990, Dong Thap) are famous throughout the countryside because they are adults but are only 1m1 tall – the same as a child. However, they did not succumb to a cruel fate, deciding to leave the village for Saigon to find work to support themselves.
In an affluent urban setting, the two choose to sell lottery tickets as their main job in hopes of selling all the tickets they pick up every day. In late 2014, during a trip to sell lottery tickets, Luong met Dao. Both share the same fate and circumstances, so they quickly find sympathy and become each other’s soulmates.
“At first, we were just friends because we were in the same situation. But the more we talked, the more we got along and fell in love. Not long after that, we decided to get married,” said Luong happily.
In October 2015, Dao and Luong and 39 other small couples participated in a mass wedding held in Ho Chi Minh City. This was called the most important event in both of their lives due to the fact that they had gone through a lot of regret and pain, but in the end still enjoyed a sense of happiness like any normal person.

“We are still struggling financially, but our lives are very happy. At that time, we lived in a rented house in Saigon and went to the streets to sell lottery tickets every day. Sometimes, the two also compete for disabled sports teams in 3 subjects: weightlifting – javelin throwing and frisbee. My husband has won many medals at the city and national level.
The new born son has left the world and lives just the two of us
After getting married, Dao and Luong had to work hard to earn a living, but they desperately wanted to have children – the crystallization of their love. Dao said she always wanted to have children as a “storage” to complete her home, feeling motherly love like many women in the world. And finally that wish came true, in 2016 she became pregnant.
“My husband and I exploded with joy. Unimaginable, after 2 years of marriage, there are “seeds” in our stomachs. However, the excitement was not long before doctors suggested terminating the pregnancy as the baby was weak and deformed.
At that time, I was stunned because I did not accept that I did not have the right to be a mother. I also know that if I can’t meet my baby this time, it means I’ll never be able to be a mother again. I decided to keep it despite the risk for my own life,” the petite woman said.
The little couple suffered the loss of their first child.
During her pregnancy, Dao was always nervous and looked forward to the day the baby was born. At 39 weeks, she gave birth and gave birth to a baby boy weighing 3.1 kg by caesarean section. He said that because of the anesthesia, one day he had to lie in the operating room for 6 hours. “The little boy was crying and was taken away by the nurse, I didn’t have time to see his face. When I woke up, my husband and the doctor said the baby was in the incubator. Two days later, everyone told me that my son had died. I was in pain and couldn’t speak, I could only feel sorry for my son. The doctor also said that if I continued to get pregnant, only 25% of the babies would be able to develop normally. It was the biggest shock of my life back then”, Dao tearfully.
He longed to be a father, but Luong was resolutely against Dao’s wish to get pregnant again. He was afraid that his pregnant wife would become weaker and weaker, afraid to see his newborn child leave the world. More than that, he doesn’t want his children to have tiny figures like his parents.
Seeing her husband sharing it, Dao immediately said: “Grandparents said that husband and wife will last a long time or not, depending on the child. So I am afraid that without children, one day the two of us will break the burden in the middle.” But Luong was able to reassure his wife by promising to be with her forever no matter what.
The two work hard in hopes of opening an auto repair shop and living a peaceful life.
Referring to the present life, the tiny couple suddenly became even sadder. The amount of insurance due to the strong spread of the COVID-19 outbreak made their lives even more difficult. They cannot sell lottery tickets or compete in sports. “The coach thought our situation was too special and agreed to live in the attic at the Tan Binh District Sports Center. When Saigon was the new normal, we had returned to the normal rhythm of life. The two of them worked hard to sell lottery tickets to save money with the dream of having enough money to open an auto repair shop”, Dao excitedly shared about the future.
Perhaps, through many ups and downs, the Dao and Luong couple no longer thought about children. They accept this life just the two of us, live together in peace!
