Three Baltic countries stopped importing Russian gas, people in Mariupol were evacuated

Three Baltic countries including Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia on April 2 simultaneously announced a complete cessation of gas imports from Russia.

“From now on, Lithuania will no longer use Russian gas. We are cutting energy dependence with Russia. If we can do it, the whole of Europe can do it,” wrote Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda’s Twitter post on April 2.

Latvian natural gas conservation group Conexus Baltic Grid also said that it no longer imports Russian gas.

“From April 1, Russian gas no longer flows through the territory of the three countries of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. The Baltic market is being served by the gas reserves located in Latvia’s underground storage,” Conexus Baltic Grid director Uldis Bariss told Al Jazeera news agency.

The people of Mariupol in Ukraine are still being evacuated

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on April 2 that efforts to evacuate people from the city of Mariupol, Ukraine were still underway, despite the fierce fighting situation there.

“Humanitarian work to facilitate the safe removal of civilians from Mariupol is still ongoing. The military situation on the ground is volatile and changes rapidly,” an ICRC spokesman told Al Jazeera news agency.
