How to grow melons on the terrace garden

After three years of organically growing cantaloupe melons on the terrace, Mr. Nguyen Giau, from Ho Chi Minh City, confidently creates delicious melons that are almost imported.

Supplies

– Plant pots with a capacity of 15-20l to plant 1 tree and 30-50l to grow 2 plants. The larger the pot, the stronger the roots will be and the more nutrients will be absorbed.

– Seed nursery

– Agricultural yarn for hanging plants

– Fertilizers: Wormwood, synthetic fertilizers, fish manure, specialized npk for fruit trees

– Left bag size 30×35cm

– Plant protection drugs: Prevent fungi + pests

– Agricultural lime + antagonistic fungus Tricodema

Planting land and seed nursery soil

New soil and nursery soil: Mix a mixture of 60% clean soil, 40% rice husk ash, coconut fiber, peanut shells, add a little lime, vermicompost, mix well, add a layer of tricodema mushrooms on the surface and water enough. Cover and incubate for 7-10 days.

Old land: After harvesting, proceed to overflow the pot 2-3 times to wash away all the residual fertilizer of the previous crop, dry the soil for 7-10 days, then mix again as above.

Soak the seeds

– Seeds purchased and soaked in warm water (25-30 degrees Celsius) or normal water for 3-4 hours. Take it out and then incubate it in a damp towel, keep it in a cool place, cover it with a plastic bag and leave it in the dark for faster germination.

-After about 24-48 hours, the seeds will crack, sow the seeds into the nursery (some seeds can be harder to crack for 3-4 days, so if the seeds do not crack after 48 hours, they should not be discarded, but must be incubated) .

– When sowing seeds, the seeds should be placed horizontally or slightly bent at the bottom of the cracked roots. After sowing, watering and putting the blister in the old place, in a dark place, the seeds will germinate faster.

– About two days later, the seeds will emerge from the ground, proceed to bring the nursery to a place with light sunshine, completely cover the rain, water twice a day in the early morning and cool afternoon.

– Add a little vermicompost at this time to make the seedlings healthier (or you can water the fish manure diluted at the rate of 3-5ml/1l of water).

– Proceed to hit the plant into the pot when the plant has 1 or 2 true leaves.

Planting and caring Planting stage for rowing pollination:

– Gently plant the plant from the nursery into the pot, avoid breaking the potting soil, place the plant so that the potting soil is level with the top soil layer of the pot. Do not bury the melon stem deeply into the ground, which can cause root atrophy.

– The potted soil is already mixed with nutrients and then composted, so there is no need to add fertilizer at this stage. Only water enough twice in the morning and afternoon, if it rains, there is no need to water.

– About 5-7 days after planting, apply the first phase of fertilizer, including a mixture of vermicompost and synthetic fertilizer. Three days after watering alternately with fish manure (pay attention to fertilize and water around the base, not to damage the trunk).

– After planting for about two weeks, the tree will start to grow tentacles to climb the truss, proceed to prune the small paddles during this period. Apply one more fertilizer as above and one teaspoon of NPK.

– Tie the rope to hang the melon body vertically, wherever the vines go, wrap the rope there. Remove all the auxiliary oars so that the tree can concentrate on the rig, leaving only the oars in the 12-15th leaf position.

– On the day of bloom, conduct additional pollination at 7-8 am if the sun is beautiful, 9-10 am if there is little sunshine so that the pollen grains are fully ripe, it will increase the ability to set fruit. Remove the top of the fruit-bearing rowan, leaving only two leaves (the fruit is in the first leaf position).

– The fertilization is maintained regularly once a week since the first application (5-7n after planting), every time a mixture of vermicompost and synthetic pellets is completed, then 3 days later, a fish fertilizer is added. If it rains, it is necessary to cover the mouth of the planting pot to avoid nutrient drift and prevent root rot.

Recruit left

– When the melon reaches the size of a duck egg, then proceed to select the fruit. Choose a fruit in the strongest rowing position, beautiful fruit, not distorted or scratched.

– After choosing, proceed to use a dedicated left-handled bag to gently wrap it. Prune away all the paddles and fruit left on the tree.

– Press the top when the tree reaches 30 leaves and trim away 3-5 leaves at the base to prevent fungal diseases, so the tree will have about 25-27 leaves.

Cultivation after fruit selection (30 days after pollination)

– Still fertilizing weekly according to the above regimen + add a little lime to strengthen the tree and prevent calcium deficiency from cracking the fruit.

– The amount of water for irrigation at this stage is about 2l/plant/day.

– Check the tree regularly to promptly handle when detecting pests or diseases.

From the period 30-45 days after pollination

– Still maintain weekly fertilizing but reduce the dose a bit (reduce nitrogen to prevent fruit cracking)
Start adding potassium by watering or spraying the leaves every five days to sweeten the melons
– From 45 days after pollination, start to stop faeces completely and gradually reduce water. Do not stop water suddenly, maintain at 50-70% compared to normal.

-Regularly check the left peduncle to identify the signs of the melon about to fall, for Honey red varieties, 2-3 days before falling, the melon will have a light aroma, slightly yellow skin, and round cracks will appear around. left stalk.

-Harvest when the melon reaches 47 or 48 days after pollination, the small fruit may ripen earlier and the large fruit may ripen 2.3 days later than the data, in general, it also depends on many things, if smelled If you can smell it, you can harvest it.
