Australian mango, Hoa Loc sand strongly discounted

Mango in Khanh Hoa, Dong Thap is in full bloom, but it is difficult to export, so the price in the garden is only a few thousand VND per kg.

Surveys at growers show that many products are falling below cost. If Taiwanese mangoes cost 5,000-7,000 VND per kilogram, now they can only be sold for 2,000-3,000 VND per kilogram. Sand Chu mango is only 5,000-6,000 VND, Hoa Loc sand continues to decrease by 10,000 VND to 20,000-25,000 VND per kg, Australian mangoes are priced at only 7,000 VND.

Ms. Theu, a grower in Khanh Hoa, said that in previous years, Australian mangoes were purchased by many traders to export to China, but this year very few people visited. It took a few days for a few familiar traders to buy and sell for wholesale markets or stores in the country.

In the same situation, Ms. Huong, a householder, had to sell 2 tons of Australian mangoes at the garden price of only 7,000 VND per kilogram. She sold 2 tons and earned 14 million dong, while the care cost was up to 22 million dong (despite saving on care costs compared to last year).

“Selling price is 7,000 VND per kilogram, but the rent is twice as high, so the family harvests by themselves,” Huong said.

Similarly, in Dong Thap, many mango growers are losing money as prices continue to plummet.

Ms. Oanh’s garden in Dong Thap has harvested 10 tons of sand with the selling price of only 5,000-7,000 VND per kilogram. Thus, each ton loss is about 2 million dong.

“Since growing mango, I have never sold at such a low price. In particular, this year the cost has increased, so it has made it more difficult to harvest mangoes,” said Ms. Oanh.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the retail price of mangoes at stores ranges around 15,000-20,000 VND per kilogram. Particularly, Hoa Loc grade 1 sand costs 40,000 VND, down 30% compared to the same period last year.

Explaining the decrease in mango prices, Ms. Hanh, a purchasing trader in the West, said that this year’s supply is abundant but demand is low, so the price of mangoes has bottomed. In particular, China is a large consumer market, but with limited purchasing and strict control, goods are difficult to clear customs, causing many products to return to domestic consumption.

A report by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in An Giang, Khanh Hoa, Dong Thap shows that the price of Taiwanese mangoes in the garden is 2,000-3,000 VND per kilogram, Hoa Loc mangoes (buckets) and mangoes around 7,000-8,000 dong, a sharp decrease compared to the same period last year.

Statistics of the mango capital of Dong Thap province show that this year, the area planted in this province is 11,500 hectares, with an estimated yield of 118 quintals per hectare with a total output of 130,000 tons. Mango is grown mainly in Cao Lanh, Thanh Binh, Chau Thanh, Lap Vo, Lai Vung districts and Cao Lanh city.
