Bring Your Own Big Wheel (BYOBW) was started by Jon Brumit in 2000 and he also became the only driver of the race in the first year. Brumit chose Easter, got in a kid’s tricycle, and slid down San Francisco’s top crooked Lombard Street. Lombard Street is only 400 meters long, with a slope of 27 degrees, but there are 8 zigzag bends.

Brumit continued this tradition for the next 6 years, gradually drawing more friends to join. In 2006, a total of 30 riders came to BYOBW, with hundreds of spectators cheering. Just a year later, the racers and spectators had grown into the hundreds.

However, the people living along Lombard Street were not interested in the race. Residents’ outcry puts BYOBW at risk of being terminated.

But Brumit found another street, no less ideal than Lombard. Vermont Street has a section only a few hundred meters long, but also has 7 zigzag bends, rivaling Lombard Street.

Riders often wear colorful, exotic costumes. Racing tricycles are usually mostly plastic, not metal to avoid injury. Participation costs are usually set aside for charity.
