Summer in central Texas, USA makes people feel hot, stuffy and hard to breathe. Therefore, people tend to want to find somewhere cool, maybe hide in an air-conditioned room or take a dip in the cool water. And Jacob’s well is one of the most visited places.

Below Jacob’s well there is a very mysterious cave, a dip in the well is not for the faint of heart. Although the crystal clear water looks appealing, it is actually quite dangerous.

Jacob’s well was accidentally discovered by people around 1850. It is actually a perennial karst stream (water flowing on limestone) with a diameter of 4.5m and a stream of water 1.5m high. At the time it was found, people used this place to get drinking water and supply water to a nearby sawmill.

Since the well was discovered, at least 1.3km has been explored. It is said to be the second largest fully submerged cave in the state of Texas, with an average depth of 36.5m.

The cool water of Jacob’s well attracts many people. Adventurous lovers jumped from the bank of a nearby overhanging rock and plunged into the opening of the well. Many divers also descend here to explore the passages of the caves below.

Many people like to take a walk on the mouth of the well, soak their feet or swim near the shore to escape the summer heat.

The Houston Chronicle reported that dozens of people lost their lives diving into Jacob’s well. Therefore, it is also known as one of the most dangerous diving sites in the world.

In 1979, two young Texans were trapped inside the well’s cave and drowned.

Even above the mouth of Jacob’s well is dangerous. The well mouth has a small diameter, surrounded by limestone, many people plunge and unfortunately hit their heads on the rock, extremely dangerous to life.

Although swimming is allowed here, people are at risk between 10am and 6pm.

– Only swim in the well if you are experienced.

– Wear shoes to avoid slipping when moving on rocks.

– Do not dive into the water.
