Porsche ‘defeats’ Hyundai in the electric car race

Hyundai Motor Corporation, in 2019, invested $84 million in Rimac to develop a prototype for a mid-size all-electric sports car as well as an all-new high-performance electric/fuel cell vehicle. . Hyundai’s original plan was to put both projects into mass production.

However, by May 2022, Hyundai seems to have stopped cooperating with Rimac. Internal sources from both sides confirmed to Automotive News Europe that Hyundai will abandon the project of a high-performance electric fuel cell vehicle, which has produced an initial result of the Vision FK concept launched last year with a capacity 671 hp and 600 km operating range.

Hyundai Vision FK concept launched in 2021.

However, the other project is an all-electric sports car that is said to be completed and can be launched early next year.

The reason for Rimac and Hyundai to go their separate ways is Porsche, specifically since the German brand raised Rimac’s stake to 24% and completed the Rimac-Bugatti joint venture last year.

A representative from Rimac denied that their relationship with Hyundai had turned bad, and confirmed between them “there is a completed project” in addition to “many future projects under discussion”.
