Russian President Vladimir Putin has so far called the military operation in Ukraine is a “special military operation”, not a war.
Putin also often explains that “special military operations” in Ukraine are necessary because the US is using Ukraine to threaten Russia, and Moscow must protect Russian speakers who are being persecuted.
The Russian president also accused the United States of threatening Russia by expanding the military alliance of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) closer to Russia’s borders.
With the hostilities continuing in Ukraine for more than two months, according to Reuters news agency, Western politicians and some observers speculate that Putin may make an important announcement on May 9. with a range of possible scenarios, from declaring war on Ukraine to declaring victory.
When asked about these speculations, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov replied: “Not likely. It’s absurd.”
Peskov also denied rumors that Putin would order a nationwide mobilization. “There is no such thing,” Peskov said.
May 9 is one of Russia’s most important events, commemorating the great sacrifice of the Soviet Union in defeating Nazi Germany in World War 2.
An estimated 27 million Soviets died in the war between 1941 and 1945. The Soviet Union was then devastated and almost every family mourned.
On this anniversary every year, Russia holds a large military parade on Red Square in Moscow and shows off the might of its armed forces.
