Specifically, Vinh Son – Song Hinh Hydropower Joint Stock Company installed three new observation stations at Thuong Kon Tum hydropower plant and combined three existing earthquake observation stations managed by the Institute of Geophysics.

Dak Drinh Hydropower Joint Stock Company installed and provided funding for two earthquake observation stations, connected to 6 observation stations in the Upper Kon Tum hydropower area.

This move comes in the context of the recent increase in earthquakes in Kon Tum. Most of the aftershocks were concentrated in Kon Plong district – the construction site of two hydropower projects Thuong Kon Tum and Dak Drinh.

On April 19, at the meeting of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, Director of the Institute of Geophysics, said that the earthquake in Kon Tum in the past time was related to: water retention of hydroelectric reservoirs. For example, tremors in Kon Plong district occurred after the Thuong Kon Tum hydroelectric power station accumulated water.

According to Mr. Anh, from 2020, the Institute of Geophysics will set up a monitoring station in Kon Tum to warn of dangers. With the increasing number of earthquakes, the locality needs to install more stations to collect data, research in detail, systematically…

Over the past year, earthquakes in Kon Tum have increased by about 5 times compared to the total number of earthquakes in 120 years. Today, Kon Plong district also recorded two earthquakes of 3.4 and 3.2 magnitude.
