Dolphin survives being bitten by a shark
AmericaA male bottlenose dolphin with a body full of shark bites survived when it washed up on a beach in Texas on May 4.
Beachgoers spotted the dolphin stranded near High Island, on the southeast coast of Texas, according to the Texas Terrestrial Marine Mammal Network (TMMSN). They informed TMMSN about a bottlenose dolphin lying on the sand. The nonprofit guided beachgoers who helped care for the animal until the rescue team arrived.
TMMSN specializes in marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation along the Texas coast. After assessing the dolphin’s condition, TMMSN’s team of experts concluded that the animal was in bad condition and carried many injuries from shark attacks. According to them, the adult male whale was aged, suffering from respiratory and chronic illness in addition to the injuries.
The rescue team transported the dolphin to TMMSN’s rehabilitation center. There, the veterinarian decided the best solution was to euthanize the animal. “Our veterinarian examined the dolphin as soon as it arrived at the centre. The staff took care of the animal until it died peacefully. It is important to beachgoers and fishermen. took the right measures to make the dolphin as comfortable as possible before rescuers arrived,” TMMSN said.
According to TMMSN, dolphins and whales rarely run aground on Texas beaches unless they are sick, injured or orphaned. Bottlenose dolphins live in coastal and offshore waters around the world. The highly intelligent animal that can grow up to 1.8 to 4 meters in length is not an endangered or threatened species in the United States, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). However, they face many threats from human activity, including pollution, collisions with boats and underwater noise.
