An abrupt, apparent change has taken place in the galaxy 1ES 1927 + 654 239 million light-years away: the central monster black hole has its magnetic field reversed, a phenomenon recorded for the first time.
Inversion of the magnetic field is not unfamiliar to smaller objects, such as our Earth, which has also reversed the South – North magnetic poles hundreds of times. The Sun also reverses its magnetic field, which is why the 11-year cycle strengthens and then weakens.
The phenomenon was once thought to be impossible with monster black holes. However, the puzzling change of galaxy 1ES 1927 + 654 has been noted.

According to Universe Today, the galaxy has been known for a long time, shining with a factor of 100 in visible light. When it was first discovered, the Swift Observatory recorded its glow in the form of X-rays and ultraviolet rays.
By 2017, it began to mysteriously brighten. The cause was initially thought to be a massive star passing, but if that were to happen, the galaxy’s monster black hole would have to rip the star apart, and disrupt the flow of gas in the black hole’s accretion disk. That didn’t happen, so the star hypothesis was dropped.
Then, the team led by Dr. Sibasish Laha from NASA found a very rapidly decreasing X-ray phase from the galaxy.
X-rays are usually produced by charged particles spiraling in a magnetic field. Therefore there must be a sudden change in the magnetic field. They also observed that the intensity of light in the visible and ultraviolet regions also increased, indicating that parts of the black hole’s accretion disk are heating up.
There is only one suitable scenario: the black hole has “overturned”, causing the magnetic field to weaken for a period and then recover. When “rebooted”, the accretion disk becomes more efficient, making the monster black hole more powerful. This reversal is sure to have a big effect, shaking the universe around the black hole, especially the objects in the same galaxy.
