In his speech on May 12, Mr. Biden acknowledged and shared the loss for families who lost loved ones in the pandemic, and urged the country not to grieve too much.
According to Reuters statistics, as of May 11, the US recorded more than 1 million deaths due to COVID-19. On average, 1 out of every 327 Americans dies from COVID-19.
There are more people lost in the pandemic in the US than the entire population of Seattle or San Francisco.
The White House said Mr. Biden paid tribute by flying the flag at half-staff. The 79-year-old president has also urged Congress to spend billions of dollars more in COVID-19 aid.
“We must stay alert to this pandemic and do everything we can to save as many lives as possible,” Biden said. “It is important for Congress to maintain these resources in the coming months.”
Health experts say more investment is needed in pandemic prevention to prevent future outbreaks.
On May 12, the World Health Organization (WHO) said the death toll from COVID-19 in the European region had surpassed 2 million.
The WHO European Region includes 53 countries and territories, including some in Central Asia.
The positive news is that the number of new cases and deaths from COVID-19 have decreased by 26% and 24% respectively in the past one week.
More than two years after the outbreak in Wuhan, China, most European countries have loosened epidemic prevention restrictions.
