The renewable energy sector has contributed significantly to Gia Lai’s growth. In 2021, although the Covid-19 epidemic caused many difficulties, the budget revenue of Gia Lai province still reached more than VND 7,880 billion, reaching 156.15% of the estimate assigned by the Provincial People’s Council. In which, the revenue from wind power projects alone reached over 2,100 billion VND.
The whole province of Gia Lai currently has 163 wind and solar power projects with a total capacity of 21,875 MW, the total investment capital is expected to be over VND 539,000 billion.
Only 16 wind power projects are under construction with a total capacity of 1,142 MW, Gia Lai has attracted a significant investment resource with more than 40,000 billion VND.
Advantages of the Central Highlands region and Gia Lai province
Through survey and assessment of renewable energy sources capable of exploiting and using, Gia Lai province can develop solar power projects with a capacity of about 7,500MW; wind power projects with a capacity of about 11,950MW.
Gia Lai is the second largest province in Vietnam and a highland province located in the North Central Highlands. Gia Lai province ranks first in area and second in population in the Central Highlands, Vietnam.
In terms of natural conditions, the province belongs to the tropical monsoon climate, abundant in humidity, with high rainfall, without storms and hoarfrost, in addition, the temperature also depends on the altitude of the regions.
Building a wind power project in Gia Lai
The Central Highlands weather is generally favorable for organic agriculture and renewable energy, where radiation intensity is good. The areas of Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, and Dak Nong have a very high number of sunny hours, about 5.1-5.3 hours/day. This is considered a great potential for the Central Highlands provinces to develop renewable energy sources.
Currently, Gia Lai province has 176 solar and wind power projects registered by interested investors with a scale of 24,300 MWp, estimated investment capital of over 720,000 billion VND.
Continue to attract and call for investment in renewable energy projects
The province sets a target by 2025, to strive to attract and put into operation new projects on renewable energy over 3,000MW-3,500MW, with a total estimated investment capital of over 156,000 billion VND.
Of which, 1,242 MW will be deployed in 2021, the rest continues to call for investment, construction and operation after 2021 and about 2,310 MW in the coming years. Projects include 36 0MW IaLy hydroelectricity, 550 MW grid-connected and floating solar power, wind and biomass power, and 1,400MW hydroelectricity.
