The flow of buyers of agricultural products and foodstuffs to Vietnamese sellers in the past year increased by 50% on China’s largest online wholesale platform.

The information was announced by Mr. Roger Lou, Country Director of Alibaba.com Vietnam at a recent event in Ho Chi Minh City. From January 2021 to January 2022, the agricultural and food sectors on this platform saw a 14 percent increase in the Business Opportunity Index (according to Alibaba’s calculations) year-on-year. The demand growth rate of this commodity group is also three times higher than the supply growth rate.

“Vietnamese suppliers in the agriculture and food industries have a clear opportunity to connect with international customers and export to new markets,” said Mr. Roger Lou.

According to this B2B platform, the share of the total transaction value of their agricultural products, food and beverages already accounts for 9% of the total value of goods in the world. In particular, the demand for food and beverages is many times greater than the supply. The average food and beverage vendor meets about 15 potential buyers per day. Therefore, opportunities are very open for suppliers from Vietnam.

So what are the key needs that businesses can capitalize on? According to Mr. Vu The Tung, Market Development Manager of this platform in Vietnam, in the agricultural products group, the items with the greatest demand include: nuts, fresh fruit, cereals, beans, fresh vegetables. …

In particular, the demand for nuts is increasing very strongly. For example, searches for keywords about pistachios, cashews, and almonds increased from 70% to over 400% in the past 30 days. Main consumption markets include: India, Egypt, USA, Turkey.

In the food – beverage group, the 4 items with the highest demand include beverages, seafood, spices, and fruits – vegetables. For seafood products such as lobster, crab, seaweed, supplier searches have increased 2 to 10 times in the past month. The markets with the highest demand include the US, Italy, Canada, Indonesia, the Philippines.

Nguyen Quoc Toan, Director of the Department of Agricultural Product Processing and Market Development, assessed that promotional activities and seeking trading opportunities on e-commerce are also a way to contribute to promoting digital transformation in the industry. agriculture, do not miss the pace of the global economic recovery.

Also according to this agency’s data, Vietnam’s agro-forestry-fishery production capacity reaches over 140 million tons per year. In which, crop products reached 80 million tons; meat and milk reached 6.5 million tons, eggs reached 13.8 billion; aquatic products reached 8.4 million tons; timber reached 20.5 million m3.

In 2021, the export turnover of this group of goods will reach 48.65 billion USD and is expected to reach 50 billion USD this year. The main agricultural products, accounting for nearly 50% of total export turnover, can be mentioned as: rice, vegetables, tea, coffee, pepper, cashew, cinnamon, anise.
