Hung Nguyen – the fisherman broke the record of two consecutive SEA Games

HanoiWith the victory on the evening of May 15, 19-year-old swimmer Tran Hung Nguyen became the first Vietnamese athlete to break the 400m record of the men’s individual medley for two consecutive SEA Games.

On the track at My Dinh Aquatic Palace, Hung Nguyen entered the men’s individual 400m medley final with the goal of defending the championship.

After the first 100m butterfly swim, swimmer Ephraim Tan (Singapore) took the lead with a negligible difference compared to his competitors. Hung Nguyen and 16-year-old teammate Nguyen Quang Thuan jumped up in the next 100m swimming backstroke, while Tan dropped to the bottom of the group.

Swimming breaststroke seems to be Hung Nguyen’s forte, when he broke out completely in the next 100m compared to Quang Thuan. In the last 100m of freestyle swimming, the 19-year-old swimmer was also the fastest and finished first after 4 minutes 18 seconds 10, 4 seconds 36 ahead of Quang Thuan.

This is the second time in a row that Quang Binh has broken the congress record in this content. In December 2019 in the Philippines, Hung Nguyen finished first with a time of 4 minutes 20 seconds 65 and set a new record at the Games at the age of 16. He is the second Vietnamese male swimmer to set a record in two consecutive periods in all events, after compatriot Nguyen Huy Hoang. Huy Hoang has twice set a record of 1,500m freestyle at the 2017 and 2019 SEA Games.

Hung Nguyen’s score of 4 minutes 18 seconds 10 is the fourth highest compared to the men’s 400m medley individual swimmers at the Asiad. But the gap between this result and the top three is too far. Defending Asiad champion Daiya Seto (Japan) reached 4 minutes 08 seconds 79, runner-up Kosuke Hagino (Japan) 4 minutes 10 seconds 30, and third place Wang Shun (China) 4 minutes 12 seconds 31. All three competitors This fisherman is also a world or Olympic champion.

Hung Nguyen is still competing in the men’s 200m medley event, where he is also the defending champion. Last period, he reached 2 minutes 02 seconds 56 in this content. The 19-year-old swimmer is expected to defend the gold medal.
