Monochrome is suitable for small spaces

According to Maria Fernandez, marketing director of Cosentino Asia, the Covid-19 pandemic has encouraged homeowners to create spaces that provide much-needed relaxation after a long day at work. A private place we often go to when we want to relax? Definitely the bathroom.

In particular, a bathroom with monochromatic tones can easily be transformed into a more relaxing space with a harmonious and visually cohesive look. “Sometimes less is better, so choosing monochrome surfaces is a great way to create an eye-catching effect in the bathroom,” says Fernandez.

To avoid a completely monotonous look, try choosing different shades, tones of a single color, or work towards adding textures for a modern appeal. Eve Mercier, founder of the Hong Kong-based Insight School of Interior Design, recommends using a solid color palette especially for small spaces.

“Using the same material conveys a visual flow and is a good solution for small bathrooms,” she says. The smaller the space, the more solid color palette you should use. This is also a great trick to use if you have a small space with corners, using a solid color will visually blur that out. If you use palettes, make sure the lighting is warm enough or your bathroom could look like a hospital!”.

When designing a monochrome bathroom, Fernandez suggests using a white background to expand the space, then adding black accents on the walls, cabinets, vanity or sink. “Using too much black can easily shrink a smaller space, so I would avoid using black as a dominant color in smaller apartment bathrooms,” she says.

A variety of surface materials can be used to create a monochrome bathroom. These include imitation stone surfaces such as those of Dekton and Cosentino’s Silestone, as well as tiles and mosaics.
