US reopens embassy in Kiev
The US State Department announced that its embassy in Kiev has reopened after being closed for three months due to the war in Ukraine.
“People Ukrainewith security support from America, defended their territory against a Russian military campaign and as a result, the American flag flew over the embassy again. We are proud to stand with and continue to support the government and people of Ukraine in this conflict,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement yesterday.
Blinken added that US officials have taken additional measures to “enhance the safety of colleagues returning to Kiev and improve security options”.

The US embassy in Kiev closed on February 14, shortly before Russia launched a special military operation against Ukraine. American diplomats moved to work in the western city of Lviv and at one point had to spend the night in neighboring Poland due to security concerns.
Western countries are beginning to restore their diplomatic presence in Kiev after Russian forces withdrew from northern Ukraine and focused their military efforts on the eastern part of the country. US Chargé d’Affaires Kristina Kvien and colleagues on May 8 returned to Kiev for the first time in nearly three months to prepare to reopen the embassy.
US President Joe Biden at the end of April nominated veteran diplomat Bridget Brink as US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Ukraine. Ms. Brink is currently serving as the US ambassador to Slovakia and will be appointed if the Senate approves Mr. Biden’s nomination.
