Cleaning up late father’s belongings discovered a million-dollar passbook
Reuters news agency recently reported on a rare incident that happened in Chile. The main character in the story that attracted media attention was Mr. Exequiel Hinojosa.
Specifically, around the 1960s-1970s, his father Exequiel squeezed every penny, trying to save up to buy a house. Whatever money he made, he sent it to a bank to save. The total amount of money he has is 140,000 pesos, equivalent to 163 USD today (about 3.7 million VND).
The numbers were meticulously recorded in the savings book of a credit union bank in Chile at the time. Unfortunately, this credit union is no longer active.
Before he could buy a house, his father Exequiel passed away. The notebook remained dormant in a box for decades.
It was not until recently, while cleaning up his late father’s belongings, that Mr. Exequiel discovered the passbook. Normally, such old passbooks were worthless. However, Mr. Exequiel noticed the words “status guaranteed” and he considered that he was fully entitled to the money at the current rate.
With interest rates and inflation over the years, the amount of 140,000 pesos is now estimated to be worth more than 1 billion pesos, or nearly $1.2 million (nearly 28 billion VND). The state government where Mr. Exequiel was adamantly refused to handle the case for him. So the case was referred to the Chilean supreme court.
“That money belongs to our family. My dad saved it by working hard”Mr. Exequiel said, and said the family never heard of the notebook’s existence, until they found it.
“I never thought this process would turn into a lawsuit against the state.”he added.
Several local courts ruled in Mr. Exequiel’s favor, but the government appealed. Now, people are waiting for a final appeals court to decide the fate of the multimillion-dollar passbook.
