JICA supports Vietnam to innovate natural rubber processing technology

The support through the project of technological innovation and wastewater treatment in rubber production, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

On the morning of May 19, the Program was jointly organized by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) with Hanoi University of Science and Technology; Nagaoka University of Technology signed the “Natural Rubber Science and Technology Innovation Project for the Global Carbon Cycle”.

The project focuses on developing advanced technologies to establish a large-scale protein-free natural rubber production process in Vietnam. Besides, research and develop new technologies on biodegradation of rubber products, low emission technology and wastewater treatment system, helping to recover resources in rubber production.

The project uses official development assistance (ODA) capital of the Japanese Government through the Cooperation Program on Scientific and Technological Research towards Sustainable Development (SATREPS) implemented by JICA and JST.

The project will be implemented in 5 years (from 2022 to 2027) and is considered as phase 2 of the project “Creating a carbon cycle with natural rubber” completed in March 2016.

Professor Yamaguchi Takashi, head of the Japanese research team, said that the project helps create an industrial foundation to promote the use of natural rubber as a sustainable exploitation of biological resources.

“Through scientific and technological innovation, we hope to contribute to building a development foundation for the chemical field of natural rubber, creating sustainable products to replace plastic from natural rubber. and used
in industry, textiles, footwear and construction,” he said.

Assoc. Prof. Huynh Dang Chinh, Vice President of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that the process of working with leading Japanese scientists from Nagaoka University of Technology will improve the capacity of science and technology innovation. for Vietnamese researchers, helping the country overcome new challenges, including the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050″.

Vietnam’s rubber industry sets a target of 1 million hectares within the next 10 years and contributes to the country’s GDP 2-2.5 billion USD. Natural rubber, obtained from the latex of the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) is a promising plant resource in Asia. This is an important raw material in the manufacture of insulating materials, anti-vibration, the production of large tires and aircraft tires, and some medical products.
